Hotel Villas Kolocep is the only hotel on the island of Kolocep, known to the local
inhabitants as Kalamota. Previously owned by the socialist government, the Hotel
and other properties on the island were part of an international auction organized by the Croatian National
Privatization Fund. In late 2005, out of the 19 international
bidders, a foundation called Otok Znanja (The Isle of Knowledge), created by three
Croatian entrepreneurs, won the bid. While they were not the highest bidder, their
vision of revitalizing the island caught the attention of the authorities.
Like the other Croatian islands, Kolocep comes alive for four to five months out
of the year, during the holiday months. For people to live and work on this beautiful
island, new economic activities need to be created in order to support the families
that live here. Hence the foundation, Isle of Knowledge, strives to create a center
of learning surrounded by untouched nature in a car-free environment.
One of the first steps in creating this center for learning was the installation of
high speed Internet access networks on the island for the institutions and businesses
to do workshops and seminars, as well as to bring distance learning facilities for
the only school for the islanders. As well, each room in the hotel is equipped with
a computer PC media center connected to the network and is free of charge.
The foundation is devoted to sustainable tourism. Not only does this concern the
controlled development of the island, respect for the environment, but also the employment of the islanders on a year round basis. We are the only hotel on the
Elafiti islands to do this, so that the inhabitants can remain on the island and
not leave to find work at the end of the season.

The hotel and its other facilities operate under the commercial name of Hotel Villas
Kolocep and the legal name is Hoteli Kolocep d.d. The island of Kolocep, along with
the other Elafiti Islands, is administered by and falls under the authority of the
